How we choose

The short list. Places we would send someone we respect.

8 places

Pondosy Bay Wilderness Resort

Cheslatta Territory, BC

Off-grid cabins on Big Eutsuk Lake. You get there by boat, or by a float plane you arrange.

Film

Cabot Lodge

Manapouri, Southland

A working station above Lake Manapouri. Fiordland is the point; the lodge is how you remain in it.

Hideaway Huts

Duloe, Cornwall

Two shepherd’s huts at opposite sides of a Cornish family farm, kept by Holly and Andy.

Hôtel Ty Mad

Douarnenez, Brittany

A century-old house above a Breton beach. Still a house, not a brand.

Film

Yangshuo Mountain Retreat

Yangshuo, China

Karst and the Li River, in the quiet of Yangshuo rather than the town.

Film

Grail Springs Wellness Retreat

Bancroft, ON

A retreat on spring-fed Chalice Lake outside Bancroft. The water runs through the baths, the steam and the kitchen.

Film

Algonquin Eco-Lodge

Whitney, ON

A lodge run on its own waterfall, in the southern forest of Algonquin.

BrookLodge & Macreddin Village

Macreddin, County Wicklow

An organic village in Wicklow, arranged as a place to stay rather than a corridor of rooms.
