The place itself
Yangshuo Mountain Retreat has stood on the Yulong River in Gaotian Town since 2001. It is 15 minutes by car from Yangshuo town, and 60 to 70 minutes from Guilin. The published point is the quiet of the river valley, not West Street. There are 34 rooms and suites. Rooms have no telephone and no television. Furniture is locally made. Direct booking on their site includes cooked breakfast, with public holidays excluded. The restaurant runs from 7:00am to 9:00pm, with chefs Aunt Luo and Xiao Li from nearby villages, and Austrian bread and pasta from Andy. Staff are hired from surrounding villages. The about page says the hotel is led by Resident Manager Little Fish, and that more than 90 percent of the team are local women. A walking path leads from the parking area upriver toward Chaolong village and the bamboo raft jetty. The hotel has its own bamboo raft landing. Moon Hill is printed as a 20-minute bike ride.
