01 - Arrive

The place itself

Marsh Lake Cabins & Adventures is Nicole and Hendrik's place on Marsh Lake, Yukon. They publish the mailing address as Box 2418, Marsh Lake, Yukon Y0B 1Y2, and the email as info@marshlakecabins.com. On the about page they write that they each came for a visit, fell in love with the land, then with each other, and never left, and that they live at the lake with their two kids. The cabins page describes two stays. The Birdhouse is in the woods close to the lake. It sleeps up to 4, with a queen bed in the loft and room for another double mattress. One room holds a kitchen, a dining space, and a wood stove. They call it off the grid: propane lights, potable water, an outhouse, and an outdoor shower house from May to mid-September. For 1 to 2 people the page lists a two-night minimum at $300, then $150 a night for a stay of 2 to 6 nights, and $750 for a week. The Lake View cabin is the one with the lake and the surrounding mountains in view. It sleeps up to 4: a queen in the loft, a double nook loft on the main floor, and a two-person hide bed in the living room if needed. They publish a kitchen and a bathroom, a dining space for up to 6, a propane fireplace, an outside fire pit, and parking on the property. For 1 to 2 people: two nights at $400, then $190 a night for 3 to 6 nights, and $1,300 for a week. For 3 to 4 people: two nights at $450, then $220 a night, and $1,500 for a week. The homepage also names The Tiny House beside The Birdhouse. The cabins page does not give The Tiny House its own description or rate. Ask before you count on a third cabin. They describe the lake as long, with mountains and forest, swans, ducks, loons, and fish, and trails behind the house for hiking, biking, or skiing. A marina nearby is where they say you can launch a canoe. They offer inside information on who to contact for a longer hike, canoe, dog sled, or horseback trip. They also run a year-round shuttle in an 8-passenger van. Drivers hold a class 4 licence and current first aid. Cabin renters are listed at $60 for up to 4 people, or $80 for up to 7, between downtown Whitehorse and the cabins (76 km). Whitehorse airport to downtown is $40 per group, up to 7 people. Gear on the same site includes a 17-foot Grumman canoe at $30 a day and a set of snowshoes at $4 a day. Their prices are in CAD and subject to 5% GST. A stay is a request on their reservations form. They say they reply within 24 hours. If that note does not arrive, they ask you to email info@marshlakecabins.com.
