Come here for

  • The night before or after the citadel
  • Travelers who want cloud forest at the station, not a Cusco city hotel

Skip it if

  • You want to stay in Cusco and day-trip without the train
  • Altitude at 2,020 meters is a problem for you

We’d rather send you somewhere else than send you somewhere that doesn’t suit you.

01 - Arrive

The place itself

Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel stands in Machu Picchu Pueblo, formerly Aguas Calientes, in the province of Urubamba. Inkaterra describes an Andean village of terraces, waterfalls, stone paths, and whitewashed adobe casitas in cloud forest. The hotel sits on a private mountainside reserve of about 5 hectares (12.3 acres), across from the train station, at 2,020 meters. They have registered 317 bird species on the property, including the golden-headed quetzal and the Andean cock-of-the-rock, and 372 orchid species, which they call the world's largest native orchid collection. Unu Spa uses mint, eucalyptus, and orchid extracts. The restaurant looks over the Vilcanota River. Cusco is about 110 kilometers away. Inkaterra recommends a car to Ollantaytambo, then a train of about an hour and a half. Buses to the citadel leave Aguas Calientes from before dawn, every 15 minutes, and the last bus back is 5:30 pm. A one-day walk of the Inca Trail is also possible, returning by bus. Sales and reservations: sales@inkaterra.com.
