Our read

The water is the reason to come, and it stays small enough to feel like a house rather than a hotel.

Come here for

Being told what happens next, instead of planning it
Bathing culture over treatment menus
Small groups and solo travellers who dislike crowds
Swimming, paddling or simply staring at water

Skip it if

You want resort scale, with several restaurants and a crowd to disappear into
You would rather improvise your days than follow a timetable

We’d rather send you somewhere else than send you somewhere that doesn’t suit you.

01 - Arrive

The place itself

Fern Resort is Ontario's all-inclusive four-season resort, welcoming families and friends since 1895 on the picturesque shores of Lake Couchiching in Ramara Township. A short drive north of Toronto. Now in its fourth generation of ownership by the Downing family, Fern has built a singular reputation among Ontario resort destinations: everything from three daily meals and all land and water activities to supervised children's programs and evening entertainment is included in a single per-person rate. The resort sits on close to two kilometres of waterfront on Lake Couchiching, offering two outdoor pools, one indoor pool, hot tubs, saunas, and a steam room alongside direct lake access. Summer programming is the heartbeat of Fern. Kayaking, paddle boards, canoes, high ropes, climbing wall, axe throwing, archery, paintball, fishing, beach volleyball, golf, tennis, and pickleball fill the days, while Bergwen's Theatre hosts professional evening entertainment. Winter brings its own rhythm: a 1.5 km skating trail, snowshoeing, curling on the lake, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, broomball, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and a full indoor activity program. For guests seeking spa-style pampering within the resort experience, Honey. The Spa is an intimate boutique day spa with three private treatment rooms: Zen Garden for massage and body treatments, The Facial Suite offering exclusively Yon-Ka facials, and Le Grand Finale for waxing, brow, and lash treatments. The Lounge adds manicure and pedicure stations. Honey is operated by fully trained, certified estheticians and is open daily, seven days a week, by appointment. All meals are served in the Heritage Dining Room in the Main Inn, with a poolside BBQ lunch added during summer packages. Fern is not a luxury boutique retreat. It is something rarer: a high-quality, genuinely all-inclusive resort that has been delivering the same promise of unrivalled family vacation since the late Victorian era.

02 - Feel

Why it is different

All-inclusive since 1895

Over 130 years of all-inclusive hospitality by the Downing family. Three daily meals, all activities, and evening entertainment in one price on Lake Couchiching.

Lake Couchiching waterfront

Close to two kilometres of waterfront: outdoor pools, a 1.5 km winter skating trail, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and swimming directly off the resort shore.

Honey – The Spa

Boutique day spa with Yon-Ka facials, massage, manicure, pedicure, and waxing. Open daily by appointment within the resort campus.

Four-season programming

Summer water sports and supervised kids programs shift to winter skating, snowshoeing, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Fern earns its four-season resort designation.

Heritage Dining Room

Three meals daily including a poolside BBQ lunch in summer. All served in the Main Inn's Heritage Dining Room with menus that rotate across the stay.

How the days go

01
Check-in at the Main Inn
Check-in from 4pm at the Front Desk in the Main Inn. The Heritage Dining Room serves dinner from 6pm, so the first evening meal is included from arrival. Your dining table is reserved for the duration of your stay. No reservations needed for any meal.
02
Morning on Lake Couchiching
The nearly two kilometres of Lake Couchiching waterfront sets the day's rhythm. Swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding in summer; skating on the 1.5 km trail in winter. The lake is the resort's greatest natural asset.
03
Activity programming
Fern's sports directors run eight age-appropriate activity programs daily. From archery and axe throwing to yoga, arts and crafts, and family tournaments. Activities run continuously, leaving guests to choose their own pace.
04
Honey – The Spa
Book a Yon-Ka facial or massage in one of three private treatment rooms. The boutique scale means genuine attention from certified estheticians. Call 705-325-2250 to arrange your appointment separately from the resort booking.
05
Bergwen's Theatre
Each evening, professional entertainers host a show in the resort theatre. Comedy, magic, and live music rotate through the weekly program. It is the social centrepiece of the resort day and a genuinely good value inclusion.
