Our read

The build and the land are treated as one thing, and it stays small enough to feel like a house rather than a hotel.

Come here for

  • Being told what happens next, instead of planning it
  • Staying somewhere that takes its land seriously
  • Small groups and solo travellers who dislike crowds
  • Walking every day and sleeping hard

Skip it if

  • You want resort scale, with several restaurants and a crowd to disappear into
  • You would rather improvise your days than follow a timetable

We’d rather send you somewhere else than send you somewhere that doesn’t suit you.

01 - Arrive

The place itself

Lumina Resort is a four-generation, family-owned cottage resort on Lake of Bays in Muskoka. The largest cottage resort on the lake, with over 1.6 kilometres of shoreline, a 100-metre sandy beach, and 240 acres of Muskoka forest, meadow, and waterfront. Operating since 1921, Lumina has reached its 105th season in 2026, a continuity that produces something few Ontario resorts can offer: the earned calm of a place that knows exactly what it is. The resort's wellness offering is rooted in the restorative power of the Muskoka natural environment rather than a spa pavilion: chef-prepared breakfast and dinner are included in every stay, a supervised children's program frees adults to decompress fully, and a comprehensive activity roster. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, sailboats, water skiing, tennis, lawn sports, and marked walking trails. Provides the physical engagement that complements mental restoration. The Muskoka dining room has panoramic views of Lake of Bays from its beam-and-glass-and-stone design. Accommodation ranges from 36 chalet-style cottages (some with fireplaces and balconies) to comfortable main lodge rooms, all with their own character and perspective. Three generations of Hungerford family management have produced a resort culture of genuine friendliness, a no-hidden-charges philosophy, and the kind of repeat-guest rate that speaks more clearly than any marketing claim. The shore breakfast. A boat trip to the resort's private island for a campfire-cooked breakfast over open water. Has become a Lumina institution.

02 - Feel

Why it is different

Lake of Bays waterfront — 1.6 km of shoreline

Chef-prepared meals included

Breakfast and dinner every day, prepared by the resort's Executive Chef and Pastry Chef in a panoramic Muskoka dining room. Three menu choices daily; fresh baking from the Lumina kitchen.

Shore Breakfast on Fire Island

A Lumina institution: boat to the resort's private island, campfire coffee, breakfast cooked over open wood, and morning mist on Lake of Bays. An experience guests describe as the week's highlight.

Four generations — 105 years of tradition

Since 1921 under Hungerford family ownership. The institutional knowledge, continuity, and genuine hospitality that only comes from a resort that has been doing one thing well for over a century.

36 chalet cottages in Muskoka forest

Chalet-style cottages with natural materials, some with fireplaces and balconies. Lakeside and woodland views across 240 Muskoka acres. Accommodation with genuine character.

How the days go

  1. Arrival on Lake of Bays

The drive through Muskoka to Milford Bay and the first sight of Lake of Bays. One of Muskoka's largest and clearest lakes. Sets the register for a week in a place that has been doing this since 1921.

  2. Your cottage, your pace

Settle into a chalet cottage with woodland or lake view, put the beach towels on the deck railing, and relinquish the planning. Meals are sorted. The children have a program. The canoes are at the dock.

  3. On Lake of Bays

Kayak through the morning mist, waterski in the afternoon, take the sailboat out before dinner. Over 1.6 km of shoreline and one of Muskoka's premier lakes, with every piece of equipment already at hand.

  4. The Shore Breakfast on Fire Island

Boat to the resort's private island for coffee made bush-style over an open campfire, watching the morning mist rise off the lake. This is the experience that guests come back to Lumina specifically to repeat.

  5. Dinner in the Muskoka dining room

Chef-prepared dinner in a beam-and-glass-and-stone dining room with panoramic Lake of Bays views. Three menu choices, fresh baking from the Lumina kitchen, and the natural end to a day spent on the water.
