The castle was originally built as a hunting and summer residence for the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the early 19th century in a neo-Gothic Romantic style. The dynasty also produced Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert. The castle is a listed historic monument in Thuringia.
