São Luiz do Paraitinga, Brazil

Fazenda Catuçaba

A 700-hectare former coffee farm in the mountains of São Paulo state, where the 1850 house is still lived in by descendants of its builders, and the table is fed from the land.

Feel

The place

1850

The main house dates to 1850. Descendants of the builders still live in it and keep it.

700 hectares

A former coffee farm in the mountains, surrounded by protected forest.

The table

Persimmon, greens, manioc flour, vegetable soup. Food from the plots, not a generic resort kitchen.

The mountain, not the sea

Picinguaba is the coastal house. Catuçaba is the farm inland.

A school of nature

The founders describe the place as a healing centre and a school of nature, including retreats for groups of up to twenty.

Our read

Catuçaba is worth the journey because you sleep on a working mountain farm whose house is still a family dwelling, and you eat what that land grows. The coast property is another stay.

Come here for

  • Travellers who want the mountain farm, not a beach pousada
  • People who will eat from the plots and sit with the people who keep the house
  • Small groups who have been invited for a retreat of up to twenty

Skip it if

  • You meant Picinguaba by the sea. That is the other We Are Nature house.
  • You want a hotel with a printed spa menu and a nightly rate on the website.

We’d rather send you somewhere else than send you somewhere that doesn’t suit you.

Fazenda Catuçaba is a former coffee farm of 700 hectares, surrounded by protected forest in a mountain range of São Paulo state. The official Catuçaba page puts the main house in 1850, and says descendants of its builders still inhabit these walls. Food is grown and cooked here: persimmon, greens, manioc flour, vegetable soup. Guests are asked to recognise birds by their calls, wake with the sun, and drink water from the place. The who-we-are page names Emmanuel Rengade as founder. He settled in Brazil in 1998, began at Picinguaba on the coast, then took Catuçaba as the mountain chapter: a large land committed to the regeneration of people and nature. Bianca is named as executive director from 2016. The same page calls Picinguaba and Catuçaba healing centres and schools of nature, and hosts groups of up to 20 for transformational retreats. This field guide is the mountain farm, not the sea house. Reservations are printed at info@catucaba.com and +55 12 99104-8484. A nightly rate is not printed on those pages. Reserve with the hotel. MindReach does not take the booking.
