## Our read

A retreat on spring-fed Chalice Lake outside Bancroft, running since 1993. The lake water goes into the baths, the steam and the kitchen, and the day is built around saunas, thermal tubs, plant-based food and evening meditation.

## Come here for

- One person or a couple who want a few quiet nights with every meal handled
- People who want a sauna, thermal tubs and a cold plunge as the daily rhythm
- Toronto or Ottawa, two and a half hours by car

## Skip it if

- You want to come as a group. They do not take group bookings
- You have a nut, soy or wheat allergy. Their kitchen says it cannot prevent cross-contamination
- You want meat, a bar, or a town to walk to in the evening

## The place

Grail Springs sits on Chalice Lake, a spring-fed lake on Bay Lake Road just outside Bancroft, Ontario, and has run as a wellness retreat since 1993. The lake is the point of the place: its alkaline spring water is used in the baths, the steam, the therapies and the kitchen, and they say you can drink it from the tap. A stay is all-inclusive. Each day has morning movement, plant-based meals and snacks, guided nature walks, and evening meditation, with a forest walk to a crystal outcrop on Mondays and Saturdays. The hot and cold circuit runs outdoors: a dry and wet sauna, thermal tubs at 98 and 104 degrees, a cold plunge, and an infrared sauna indoors. The grounds hold a labyrinth, a prayer grotto, peace cairns and a crystal mound for sitting quietly, and there are canoes and paddle boards on the lake. Treatments are booked ahead and include massage, craniosacral work, sound healing, red light therapy and a steam tent. It is for one person at a time: no group bookings, at most two to a room, and guests must be 16 or older.
