## Why it is Chosen

A working station above Lake Manapouri. Fiordland is the point; the lodge is how you remain in it.

## Our read

A lodge for twelve on a working station above Lake Manapouri, bordering Fiordland National Park. Breidi and Brad Alexander host, dinner is a set menu from the farm, and the Doubtful Sound boats leave five minutes down the road.

## Come here for

- Walkers who want the Kepler Track and Doubtful Sound from one base
- Couples who want a set-menu dinner and a hot tub above the lake
- Four or eight people taking the whole lodge

## Skip it if

- You want to choose dinner from a menu each night
- You want a large resort with many rooms
- You expect lunch with a suite. Their suite list includes breakfast and dinner; lunch comes with the package

## The place

Cabot Lodge sits on a 2,000-acre sheep and deer station above Lake Manapouri, on the edge of Fiordland National Park. Breidi and Brad Alexander own and run it, and take no more than twelve guests at a time. There are four suites: the Premier Suite with its own kitchen and the highest views, the Deluxe Suite with an open fire, the Courtyard Suite with a private outdoor courtyard, and the Takatimu Suite with an enclosed living room facing the Takatimu Mountains and Mount Titiroa. A two-bedroom Villa stands apart. The lodge is octagonal, so the lake and mountains are in view from every side, and the rooms are joined by covered walkways around a courtyard garden. Evenings begin with a drink and canapés, then a multi-course set menu from the farm. Breakfast is cooked. On the station there are private walking trails, a fishing jetty, a hot tub in the beech trees above the lake, 4WD farm tours and beekeeping. The Doubtful Sound boat terminal is five minutes away, and the Milford Road is close.

## What it is like

- A working station: Two thousand acres of sheep, deer, cattle and horses. Private trails climb to the highest point of the property and drop to a jetty facing the National Park.
- The evening: A drink and canapés, then a multi-course set menu cooked from the farm, with the lake and mountains outside.
- The hot tub: A spa pool in the beech trees above Lake Manapouri, through the rose garden at the top of the lodge.
- On the farm: 4WD farm tours and beekeeping, run from the lodge. Exclusive-use stays add privately guided farm activities.
- Doubtful Sound: The boat terminal is five minutes away. Their Fiordland Escape adds a night aboard on the Sound and a Kepler Track hike with a picnic.
- An octagonal house: Every room looks at the lake or the mountains. Covered walkways join the suites around a courtyard garden with an outdoor fireplace.
