## The place

Beniya Mukayu is a ryokan at 55-1-3 Yamashiro Onsen, Kaga, Ishikawa 922-0242. The architect they name is Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama. The name, on their English page, comes from Zhuangzi: a word for what looks useless and is left to grow, like a bent tree that ends up giving shade. They build the rooms from tatami, shoji, bamboo, diatomaceous earth, and washi. Rooms they list, each with a hinoki outdoor hot spring: four Japanese rooms of 70 square metres, with a moon-viewing terrace, a bamboo veranda, and an anteroom, for one to three guests, and a hammock on the terrace in good weather. Two Western rooms of 60 square metres, on the second floor, with two semi-double beds of 120 by 195 centimetres, a sofa and a desk, and 18 steps at the door, for one or two guests. From that terrace they point out a pine planted by a prince of the Kan'in house. Two Japanese-Western junior suites, also with an outdoor bath and a terrace. Phone +81 761-77-1340. Email beniya@mukayu.com. Book on mukayu.com. Rates are on their site.
