## Our read

Guangzhou has several luxury hotels in Tianhe. This one is in Haizhu, and the building is the argument: Aedas drew it as wings, and the swim is a 25-metre heated pool with cobblestone dolphins and a shallow pool for children. The Chinese room is dressed as a Xiguan mansion, which is a Guangzhou house type, not a generic banquet hall. Come if that building and that table are why you are south of the river. Skip it if you wanted Mandarin Oriental beside Taikoo Hui. That hotel is on Tianhe Road.

## Come here for

- The 25-metre pool, if the dolphins and the shallow end matter
- Cantonese in the Xiguan-style dining room
- A stay in Haizhu, at the winged building on Xingang East Road

## Skip it if

- You wanted the Mandarin Oriental next to Taikoo Hui. That is Tianhe, not Haizhu.
- You need an outdoor resort pool. This one is indoors, 25 metres, looking at the exhibition hall.

## The place

Langham Place, Guangzhou is at 638 Xingang East Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou 510335. The hotel phone is +86 20 8916 3388. Aedas designed the exterior as a pair of unfolding wings. The art inside is commissioned, not a logo wall. The pool is the fact that separates a swim from a photograph: 25 metres, heated, indoors, mosaic, with three dolphins in cobblestone on the wall, a children's pool at 0.6 metres, and windows toward the exhibition hall and the trees. The Chinese restaurant is a high room with roof eaves and coloured windows in the manner of a Xiguan mansion, with a Hong Kong chef cooking Cantonese. This is Haizhu, on Xingang East Road, not the Mandarin Oriental beside Taikoo Hui in Tianhe, and not a convention floor with a view of the river as an afterthought. The wings and the pool are the reason the building is worth the taxi. Reserve with the hotel. MindReach does not take the booking.
