## The place

UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa sits on the Quadrado in Trancoso, Bahia, a grassy colonial square overlooking the Atlantic, under UNESCO protection. Half of the casas date back hundreds of years to the village's founding. They were restored by designer Wilbert Das with local artisans, using traditional techniques and reclaimed materials. Each casa is named. The published list includes Quintal, Seu Pedrinho, Seu Irênio, Terraço do Céu, Casa da Árvore, Seu João, Zé e Zilda, Gulab Mahal, Eugênia, Casinha, Casa Das Artes, Casa Luz and Casa do Lago. Some hold one suite, some two, Casa Luz and Casa do Lago hold three. Vida Spa & Lab uses Bahia's plants and Pataxó healing traditions. Signature work includes an Almescar oil massage. Almescar, also called breu branco, grows in UXUA's gardens and is endemic to southern Bahia and the Amazon. Products are made at Vida Lab on the grounds. The spa also lists a moonbath pre-sun scrub, Bahian cacao facial, foraging across restinga, Atlantic rainforest, mangrove and mussununga, capoeira with local masters, and an aventurine quartz pool made of 40,000 pieces of native Bahian stone.
